- * Ribonuclease III family signature *
- *************************************
-
- Escherichia coli ribonuclease III (EC 3.1.26.3) (gene rnc) [1] is an enzyme
- that digests double-standed RNA. It is involved in the processing of ribosomal
- RNA precursors and of some mRNAs. Fission yeast pac1 [2] is a ribonuclease
- that probably inhibits mating and meiosis by degrading a specific mRNA
- required for sexual development.
-
- These two enzymes are evolutionary related and share regions of sequence
- similarity; one of which is a perfectly conserved stretch of 11 residues which
- we use as a signature pattern.
-
- -Consensus pattern: H-N-E-R-L-E-F-L-G-D-S
- -Sequences known to belong to this class detected by the pattern: ALL.
- -Other sequence(s) detected in SWISS-PROT: NONE.
- -Last update: December 1991 / First entry.
